Don’t get us wrong: we love food Instagram accounts filled with pretty food pictures and culinary inspiration. But sometimes you just want to be entertained. Behold, here are five of-the-moment Instagram accounts that combine food with an element of humor, art, or just plain novelty. We promise they’re worth the diversion.
Shiba Sommelier (@ShibaSommelier)
Motto: “Shiba + Wine. Much taste. Such fancy. Wow.”
Why it’s a must-follow: Human tasting notes are so 2014. Forget stars; this sassy Shiba Inu reviews the latest bottles, awarding them anything from 0 to 5 bones, with price as a consideration. As she says, “If you’re a $$$$$ wine, you better be pretty tail-waggingly delicious!”
SymmetryBreakfast (@SymmetryBreakfast)
Motto: “symmetry breakfast for my boyfriend and me”
Why it’s a must-follow: An unsatisfactory start to the day is not a concept the duo behind SymmetryBreakfast are willing to consider. The UK-based pair will gratify your stomach (and your eyes) with perfectly symmetrical, impeccably-photographed breakfast platters.
Gretchen Röehrs (@groehrs)
Motto: “Still playing with food.”
Why it’s a must-follow: Food and fashion align on Gretchen Roehrs’s Instagram feed: the fashion illustrator combines her natural talent for fashion sketches with simple real food adornments to make a bold statement on how art imitates life.
Chef “Jacques La Merde” (@ChefJacquesLaMerde)
Motto: “Small portions | tweezered everything”
Why it’s a must-follow: Think the fine dining’s gotten a little out of touch? Then these photos of fancily-arranged fast food — created by an anonymous chef familiar with the restaurant industry’s de rigueur plating techniques — will give you a good laugh. If you can handle his all-caps shouting, the chef’s captions are hilarious. One of our favorites? His self-described plate of “hay-baked Hot Pockets with Hidden Valley Ranch spheres and a puree of zoodles.”
Red Hong Yi (@RedHongYi)
Motto: “Artist and shy rebel. Likes to paint, but not with a paintbrush.”
Why it’s a must-follow: Artist and architect Red Hong Yi has garnered worldwide attention for her portraits of icons using unconventional materials, many of them food ingredients (like her portrait of the Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei made entirely out of sunflower seeds). Our favorite (and her most creative Instagram rollout) is a portrait of a tea puller from her native Malaysia, made out of 20,000 steeped tea bags.
